We knew that our endeavors with Blue Mosaic would face a stiff competition but never thought that it would be such a sweet competition that comes in the form of the traditional “loukoumi”. One of the simplest pleasures that you can enjoy in Greece!
Over two days, 23rd and 24th August, the colourful “loukoumia” will become the raw materials in the hands of artists to create unique – and sweet – pieces of mosaic art! The artwork will take place at Syros, during the 2nd “Loukoumi” Festival that will transform Syros town into a bohemian “Loukoumartre”!
For the unfamiliar ones, Syros is almost a synonym for “loukoumia”! The history of the traditional sweet “loukoumi” at the island dates back to the 19th century and has been exported for more than 150 years.
The ingredients are simple … sugar, starch and sugar, enriched with pistachios, hazelnuts, walnuts, rosewater, mastic, cinnamon and other flavouring materials, before applying a generous cover of icing sugar!
